Auschwitz, POLIN et la promotion de la Pologne

Dans une interview publiée dans Gazeta Wyborcza (journal de centre gauche) le 30 août 2017, le nouveau chef de l’Organisation polonaise du tourisme Marek Olszewski (parti gouvernemental PiS, Paix et Justice) a confirmé que le musée POLIN et le musée Auschwitz ne feront plus partie d’un « programme touristique officiel » promu par son bureau. Ce dernier vise à promouvoir l’attractivité touristique de la Pologne, et Auschwitz ne peut pas être vu comme une « attraction ».

Cette prise de position a conduit à une réaction d’indignation massive, à la fois dans la presse et sur les réseaux sociaux. Le ministre du Tourisme Witold Banka a annoncé, à la mi-journée, lelimogeage immédiat d’Olszewski de ses fonctions.

In an interview published in Gazeta Wyborcza (center-left newspaper) on August 30, 2017, the new head of the Polish Tourist Organisation Marek Olszewski (PiS, Peace and Justice government party) confirmed that POLIN Museum and Auschwitz Museum are not going to be a part of an official touristic curriculum promoted by his office. His office aims to promote Poland as a country attractive for visitors, and Auschwitz cannot be understood as an “attraction”.

He added that it is important for him

to promote what is valuable in our own culture, to show our contribution to the development of Europe. We do not feel the need to give priorities to places and events linked to the history of other nations [Jews].

This interview lead to a massive online reaction of indignation, both in press and in social networks. The Minister of Tourism Witold Banka announced, at the midday of the same day, the immediate dismissal of Olszewski from his functions for his “scandalous stance”.
